Maples Diesel Heavy Equipment is a skid steer repair shop at 1047 Pennington Rd, Albemarle, NC 28001, in Stanly County. Construction, landscaping, agriculture, and development keep skid steers working across Montgomery, Anson, Rowan, Cabarrus, Union, and Mecklenburg counties — including Charlotte — and across the broader Piedmont of North Carolina. Independent shops that will actually diagnose a diesel, instead of quoting a head gasket on sight, are thinner on the ground here than in the biggest cities.

This page is a straight account of a New Holland skid steer repair we finished in the shop: engine oil cooler replacement on a 2021 L320 after the owner found mayonnaise in the oil cap and sludge in the radiator. The engine was still running normally. That detail mattered.

Machine details — 2021 New Holland L320

Vertical-lift skid steer loader. About 67 HP gross, 2,000 lb rated operating capacity, and a roughly 2.2 L turbo diesel. Compact enough for tight sites, heavy enough that a wrong repair costs a week of production.

Symptoms and diagnosis — oil cooler vs head gasket

The complaint was oil in coolant on a skid steer, plus mayonnaise in the oil cap. That combination scares people into a head-gasket quote. We looked at how the engine was actually running before we opened anything major.

What we found

  • Mayonnaise-like gunk under the oil filler cap — classic oil/coolant emulsion
  • The same tan sludge in the radiator and coolant neck
  • Oil in coolant, or coolant mixing into the engine oil
  • Engine otherwise ran normally — no hard miss, no overheating complaint, no loss of compression symptoms
  • Owner concern that a head gasket had failed and a major engine job was coming

A blown head gasket usually shows up with more than sludge: overheating, coolant loss under load, a miss, white smoke, or combustion pressure in the cooling system. This L320 was not doing that. The mixing point that fit the evidence was the engine oil cooler — oil and coolant share a heat exchanger, and when it fails internally you get exactly this mayonnaise without a failed head. That is the difference between an oil cooler replacement and an engine-out job.

Once the oil cooler was confirmed, the repair stayed at that level. No head pull. No “while we are in there” engine work the machine did not need.

  1. 01Confirmed the contamination path before any major teardown
  2. 02Replaced the failed engine oil cooler
  3. 03Flushed the oil system thoroughly so leftover emulsion would not stay in the galleries and pan
  4. 04Flushed the coolant system and refilled with the correct coolant
  5. 05Completed fluid and filter service
  6. 06Verified the mayonnaise was gone and the two systems were no longer mixing

How big a job is an oil cooler replacement?

A lot of owners hear “oil cooler, not a head gasket” and assume it is a quick afternoon swap. It is not. On a skid steer like the L320, the engine oil cooler is buried in the engine bay and tied into both the oil and coolant systems, so getting to it means opening up a fair amount of the machine — cooling package, hoses, and surrounding components have to come out of the way before the cooler itself is even accessible.

Once the failed cooler is out, the job is still not done. Oil and coolant have been mixing, so both systems have to be flushed thoroughly — the oil galleries, the pan, the radiator, and the coolant passages — or the mayonnaise left behind keeps circulating and the new cooler does not get a clean start. New fluids, new filters, and a verification pass to confirm the two systems are no longer mixing all come after the part itself goes in.

So it is a real job: more labor and more downtime than most owners expect when they hear “oil cooler.” But it is still a fraction of a head gasket or engine-out repair. No cylinder head removal, no machining, no bottom-end teardown, and no week-plus of production lost waiting on an engine job the machine never needed. The oil cooler replacement costs more time and money than people assume — and far less than the head gasket they were afraid of.

Why the diagnosis matters

A skid steer that shows oil in the coolant is easy to over-repair. Parts and labor for a head gasket — or a short block — will park a landscaping or site machine for days and cost several times an oil cooler. If the cooler is the leak, that money does not fix anything the engine needed.

  • Avoided an unnecessary head gasket or engine job on a machine that was still running normally
  • Got the L320 back to work instead of sitting for a major repair
  • Stopped ongoing contamination before bearings and the cooling system took more damage
  • Gave the owner a clear answer: oil cooler vs head gasket, based on what the machine was actually doing
